AU Description: The Dawnwing sect was a school of powerful but independent monster hunters that only takes on the most promising of students, but even by that standard young Ziel was exceptional. His father was a free commoner and a mage of mediocre skill, but Ziel quickly surpassed him in power and talent. When he requested to join the Dawnwings, he was accepted, and quickly rose through the ranks as he absorbed all their lessons and became a star pupil of the school. He went on to have an illustrious career, protecting the people of the Empire from what he could. He couldn't do much about the Empire's own noble classes, but he could save people from behemoths and other monsters that normally would take an entire platoon to take down.

At the time, Zeil was known to be a larger than life kind of figure. He was bombastic, bordering on arrogant, and loved food and drink, but also heroic, kind hearted, and encouraging to anyone who was trying to follow their own dreams. Everyone who knew of him said he was going to go far.

Unfortunately, there are threats that even the heroic Dawnwing sect could not handle. Behemoths are a class of monster that stand head and shoulders above most others, but there is one that stands head and shoulders above other behemoths. Known was the Wandering Titan, it's so large that even the Imperial Army has an official policy for dealing with it of "Evacuate the area and hope it moves on."

When the Wandering Titan set its sights on the Dawning Sect, Ziel said "We don't need to evacuate. Our school has stood tall against all kinds of threats. What's one more?"

He was extremely wrong. The Wandering Titan just sort of...walked through the school, killing many students as the whole building collapsed. The survivors fled to a nearby city for aid, and that's where the day went from bad to worse. The Imperial officier in the city had been perpetually aggravated by the presence of the Dawnings. They had good PR as folk heroes who went about saving people from danger, but were strong enough that they were hard to bully around, and if there's one thing the Empire hates it's people it can't control. So when they found the Dawnwings at their front door as refugees, they saw an opportunity.

The slaughter of the surviving Dawnwing school was brutal and efficient, save for one oversight. Ziel himself was beaten within an inch of his life, and then tormented further as the imperials used dark magics on him that shattered his spirit beyond recovery. Not just his spirit as in his morale or will to live, but also the systems that allowed him to use the magic that was central to his fighting style. They left a hollow miserable wreck of the man he used to be, technically alive, but utterly defeated as a threat.

He now wanders the world of Esthere searching for a way to heal his spirit so he can return to his former strength. His heart isn't in it, though. He knows that no number of dead Imperials at his feet will bring back the people he lost, and when you live in constant pain for years on end, it becomes difficult to work up the motivation to do anything.

There's still a flickering ember of the old Ziel in him, though. He can't quite get himself to give up. He'll complain about it and groan and moan, but he'll never ACTUALLY stop trying, especially when people are in danger.

OU Backstory: Wiki entry
Powers and Abilities: The wiki link above lists his canon abilities, which are extensive. AU Ziel is going to be pretty different just by the nature of this game being much smaller in scale than Cradle's setting.

Ziel's powers stem from a rare ritual performed by the Dawnwing Sect wherein a new recruit, after finishing their initiation and basic training, is expected to hunt down and defeat a monster that has capabilities that reinforce their own personal strengths. They then absorb the spirit of that creature, not just devouring it's power but also permanently altering their abilities, as well as occasionally having odd side effects (in Ziel's case, it gave him small horns. The horns don't do anything beyond look cool.)

Ziel, finding himself suited for the role of a physical fighter relying on overwhelming power, picked a behemoth of a similar type as the Wandering Titan (though not as all powerful). Fusing with it massively increased his physical strength, toughness, and stamina.

The Dawnwing sect also offers a variety of personal enforcement techniques that use ether to further empower the user's physical abilities. Ziel specialized in the Iron Anchor technique, which also improves his physical strength and toughness and roots him to the ground (so it doesn't work if he doesn't have firm footing).

The most well known Dawnwing technique, however, is the Oath Sign. This versatile technique creates a ring of magic runes that can be placed around something or just free floating in the air. Depending on how it's used, it will either increase or decrease the speed of anything attempting to pass through it. By using oath signs, Ziel can increase the speed of his attacks, create floating barriers to block attacks, trap enemies in place, or even just create floating platforms he can stand on.

Unfortunately, Ziel's ability to channel ether is horribly damamged. In his current state, he can't actually use more than a small fraction of his power without feeling like his body is full of shards of glass ripping him apart from the inside, which drastically reduces his stamina and focus. He's very sturdy simply because most attacks do less damage to him than he does to himself by using his own powers. If he somehow was able to heal his mangled spirit (no easy task), he would be a truly formiddable opponent, but as he is he is now severly limited.

Desired Faction: The Vault is known for picking up ruined weapons and fixing them, which is symoblically appropriate, and for having vast knowledge, which Ziel would be interested in in hopes that it has some healing technique that can cure his wounds. Elysium would be funny just for trying to imagine what Ziel would be like trying to be social. Flotsam would have him at his most useless, as his powers work best with his feet planted on solid ground and would be held back while at sea.
